Animoto is an interesting video editing tool allowing the
creator to develop a story with a theme. It is a free and fairly easy to use
and has great implications for the classroom environment. Teachers could use it
to introduce materials to students quickly and embed it in a class website or
as a link within a learning management system. Used in conjunction with
Picmonkey, it is possible to edit the pictures before including them in the
video. Both applications are quite easy
to use and offer several tools, such as music in Animoto and flowers and butterflies
that can be added to photos in Picmonkey.
I created a video that introduces personal finance to my
students by asking them the things for which they are saving and how personal
finance can help them make those dreams come true. Personally, I did not have
any problems with the product, but had a bit of a problem embedding the code in
the mixxt site.
The potential for teachers in the classroom may also include
the students using this open source software to create a video about the
objectives they learned in the classroom. One of the potential uses would be in
a biology class where students could take pictures of their experiments or
dissections, and then create a video with Animoto that shows the process and
the results. History classes could use this approach using artifacts to produce
a video showing what students have learned about a certain period of time. Math
classes could have students take pictures of the problems they worked and
create the video from each step they used. Teachers may also want to use this
software to create virtual field trips for their students. For example, foreign
language teachers might create a video using photographs of landmarks in the
country of the language that they are studying.

I love the ideas you shared for using this software in the classroom. In particular, I like the one about photographing a dissection in biology and photographing the steps in a math problem. The idea of a virtual field trip is also a great one. I can see using this application to create a movie about a filed trip the class has gone on as well. I will do that this year when my class goes on a field trip. Often times, the field trip with elementary students is very busy and chaotic. It would be nice to put the pictures of the trip in a video and "revisit" the places on the field trip for further discussion and learning.
ReplyDeleteVery informative video. It is important for students to learn about personal finance. I am glad you are teaching your students to be responsible. Showing them pictures about what they can spend their money on, and asking them the question is very helpful. It makes them think twice before they spend!
ReplyDeleteAn interesting and useful video clip. With those vivd images, I guess your students could learn better about personal finance. This online media tool really helps to show images and descriptions to viewers, which only by teacher to explain may not have such effective result.
