Assignment 8: Augmented Reality

The augmented reality assignment was created with Layar. The Layar application brings printed materials like advertising and promotional flyers to life. With the addition of buttons to any part of a poster, flyer, etc., the page is able to be scanned with a barcode scanner on a mobile device like a smart phone, and the links will take you to specific websites that offer more information like where to purchase a product, a map to a specific destination, or a video about a product, service or business. It helps make the connection between the physical and virtual worlds.

The implications for education, especially in the world of graphic design, are numerous. Students would be able to create flyers, brochures, newsletters, ad campaigns, etc. and make the information engaging for the consumer. Immediate access to products is what the consumer expects today and this is a perfect way to give them what they desire. Many businesses are looking for ways to promote their products in the global, mobile world we live in today and Layar offers a way to accomplish this task. In the business of advertising, $38 a month is not a huge amount for being able to promote a product in such an engaging manner. For the $38 a month the content is active for one year, there are no ads and statistics are included. There is a more expensive option of $4,000 a year that includes live content for the life of the subscription, downloadable statistics, custom buttons, campaign collaboration, dedicated online support, and online training. Considering how much companies pay every year for advertising, this is not an unthinkable option. I can definitely imagine some graphics design students working for companies that would use such an application for their advertising needs.

  1. I agree that augmented reality is the answer for those that demand immediate access, as many of today's consumers do. The uses for this technology are only limited by one's imagination. With the options of printed material as well as GPS linking, the implications on how we use our smartphones to conduct business are enormous.

  2. Great idea for advertising, I agree. This was probably my favorite tool of all. I have used it several times. I enjoy using it in the classroom for activities, and my students love it because they get to use their phones in the classroom.

  3. I love this tool. It is amazing to scan just an image, and to see all the information pop up in front of your eyes. This is so helpful to gather all the needed messages together to the audiences, and everybody could use it in different ways, such as mass communication, advertising, and business areas.
